Today, January 8th marks the 77th birthday of the Grand Dame of Song, Dame Shirley Bassey. Diamond Bassey would like to wish Dame Shirley a happy and wonderful birthday, and many, many more!
Dame Shirley Bassey was born January 8, 1937 in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. She was the youngest of seven children born to a Nigerian father, Henry Bassey and an English mother, Eliza Jane Start. She grew up in a poor family but used her talent, that awesome voice, to rise to worldwide acclaim. Last year, she stole the show at the 2013 Oscars, singing “Goldfinger.” Over her 60-plus years in show business, Dame Shirley has sold almost 150 million records. Today, Dame Shirley lives in Monaco, and still performs an occasional concert, primarily for charitable causes.
Dame Shirley is a singer’s singer, who would quickly put these much younger so-called pop-queens to shame, even today, at age 77. If we were to put Dame Shirley on the same stage with Beyonce, Rihanna or Miley Cyrus, one note from her would have them thinking about early retirement.
