Rare Gems: Shirley Bassey’s “For the Love of Him” (1971)

B-Side cover art for the song “For the Love of Him”. The A-Side was “Love Story (Where Do I Begin?)”

DiamondBassey.org featured this rare gem a few months ago however, we decided to feature it once again with a delightful video courtesy of YouTube channel, sas9023055.  This song was the B-Side to Dame Shirley‘s 1971 single, “Love Story (Where Do I Begin)?“, which peaked at #34 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was written by Al Mortimer, and American singer Bobbi Martin, whose version went to #13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970.

For the Love of Him” was not originally a part of an album release however; it was later released as a bonus track on the CD version of Dame Shirley‘s 1971 album, “Something Else“. The song was also included on Dame Shirley‘s 1994 compilation box set, “Bassey: The EMI/UA Years 1959 – 1979“.

We can all learn a lesson from this song. “For the Love of Him” is basically a guide book on how to treat your man: “For the love of him, make it your reason for living…(ladies, when you stop chuckling try listening to the song again – it’s actually quite nice :) ) . Yes, there was a time when ladies treated men like the center of the universe – not like today where on reality TV shows, we see ladies (if you can call them that, heifers really) treat their men like whipping boys. Neither should a lady be a doormat for any man. We at DiamondBassey.org believe in mutual love and respect between man and woman. No one, man or woman, should ever settle for an  abusive or one-sided relationship. Love one another and enjoy!
